Bedroom Design: Phase 1

Recently I was asked by my sister to help her in designing her new bedroom. She has the opportunity to start from scratch and needed some guidance in bringing her vision to life. She isn’t much of a visualizer, and doesn’t care for decorating. Given it’s something I am passionate with, it was the perfect opportunity to help her.

Her new room is in the basement of a bi-level, because of the type of build it’ll come with some perks. Since the design of the home is multi leveled she is lucky enough to have a window larger than the average for a basement. With being partially above ground she will get ample sunlight during the days allowing us to make a couple small but bold statements in our design choices.

When I asked what she had in mind and showed her some pictures for inspiration she settled on something moody, classic, but with some mid century touches. A little feminen, but nothing that screams it.

The room is small, measuring at 10ft by 8.5 ft. So to achieve a moodier impression to the space without making it feel smaller we decided to go with a lighter base on the walls, and paint the bottom half where the bed will be positioned a darker colour, to give the impression of a headboard without the additional bulk eating up unecessary space in the square footage.

I find that whites on the walls can tend to look dingy in basements, so to prevent that we are going with a warmer off white as our base. The warm undertones should help prevent that from happening and as for the accent wall we are going to go with a darker grey. She wants to keep it fairly neutral so she can age into the space well overtime and won’t have to worry about getting tired of anything.

She requested her nightstand to be floating to save some more floor space and a deeper wood. When sourcing all the pieces in the mood board I created I found the perfect option for her from EQ3. Something that is important to her is being able to get ready in her room. With that being said, trying to optimise the amount of square footage she has I suggested sharing her nightstand as a vanity. Since it’s floating she can have a stool set underneath and have a mirror mounted on the wall. The mirror will help open up the space and keep the counter clear so she can utilise it at it’s full potential. And with this nightstand in particuliar measuring at 21″ wide it’ll be the perfect amount of space to get ready and to save space.

For a mid century element, the wall sconce we chose and the stool will be the perfect fit. And I plan on incorporating some prints in fabric and decorative pieces to bring in some mid century style.

This is the first time I’m helping someone design their space and I’ve realised during this process how much I enjoy it. It’s so much different helping someone else rather then working on your personal space. I can’t wait to bring it all together.

Follow along to see the second phase where we will share some updates and some sneak peaks on whats to come!

1. Oval Mirror This one is just for reference, we plan on possibly finding one from HomeSense. Something a unique, has some interest and large enough to be efficient.
2. Rivet Gold Metal Plug-In Wall Sconce This one from Amazon was perfect. And with an additional 20% off during prime day it was a steal.
3. Benjamin Moore Balboa Mist We will be using this as our main wall colour.
4. Marcel Single Drawer Floating Nightstand
5. This adorable stool from Structube will be the perfect fit for a mid century feminine touch.
6. This beautiful painting is here strictly for inspiration. We will be using a beautiful painting our grandmother painted and had framed for my sister. Unfortunately I can’t source it.
7. Another photo for inspiration. We plan to have a wall covered in wall to wall bookshelves with some brass details in the brackets.
8. This bed frame and mattress are from Endy, my husband and I are on our second mattress and bought the new frame from them. I will be reviewing them both in a future post. I’m planning on ordering it for her room, so you may have an idea on how I already feel about it. Stay tuned!
9. This euro pillow or this one and bed sheets are there for some more inspiration. I’m hoping to source some similar fabric to sew some throws myself.
10. Benjamin Moore French Beret will be our accent colour for an impression of a headboard.
